The new Olympic event

On Wednesday, I arrived at Curt's work to pick him up (I was picking him up due to uninteresting events that don't need to be explained) and saw this:Do you see the tire spinning through the air? Apparently, Curt and his co-workers have tire-throwing contests. Two people stood at the far end of the parking lot to make sure tires didn't roll into the road. It made me laugh.

Back from Flouride-duh

The adventure began on June 10 when, for some reason, Delta told me to sit in a different place on the plane ride to Orlando, and I had a window seat:Not only that, the two seats next to me were unoccupied. How often does that happen? I'm pretty much the luckiest person I know.

After landing and being shuttled to Daytona Beach, I arrived in my Hilton hotel room at about 1 a.m. My roommate, Monica, was sleeping. Obviously. She's from Washington, D.C. and ended up being quite the chatty chatter. Not as chatty as last year's roommate, but I'm seeing a pattern. Anyway, this was the ocean view from our room that I took during my June 11 lunch break:The people in charge (Educational Testing Services, otherwise known as ETS) extended our work day by 45 minutes compared to last year, so we scored essays in a cold room from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break and two 15-minute breaks. The good news is that I went to the beach every evening except for one when I explored local shops with my friend, Curtis. This is me warming up in the evening on June 11:On June 13, it started raining shortly before we were dismissed for the day, so everyone stood staring out the doors instead of running across the street to the hotel. Seriously, it poured:Apparently, Utah had crazy rain storms during my absence, as well. Aside from one more minor rain shower, the Daytona Beach weather was fantastic the rest of the week. I loved being outside as much as possible.

While checking out a souvenir shop on June 14, I came across the best mug ever:I wanted to buy it but was worried the hilarious bits would break off in my luggage.

During one of my beach walks, I carved a cliché heart in the sand with my toes:I missed Curt a lot.

During my 15-minute breaks, I rushed outside to walk in the sun. I promise you, it was so cold in the grading rooms. I loved all of the palm trees and took this picture on June 17:I found a cemetery on the last day. Since walking Peyton through our local cemetery by my house (he doesn't piddle or poop there), I've started loving them. This one was closed, but I walked around the outside. It was pretty -- I wish I could have gone inside.

I took a nap after finishing on June 17, the last day of scoring:I was so tired and SO ready to come home. I paid a fee to change my flight to earlier in the morning and woke up at 3:15 a.m. to get on the shuttle. It was worth it.

After Curt picked me up at the airport, we ate at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it restaurant called Cape May Grill at 434 W Center Street in Provo. Curt had eaten there, but I was iffy about it. I ordered a breakfast burrito, and it was the best breakfast burrito I have ever eaten. I've been thinking about it ever since. I recommend you try this place, and remember not to judge a book by its cover when you walk in.

I'm so glad to be home.

I'm in Florida!

I'll be in Daytona Beach until the end of next week grading Advanced Placement (AP) English Language tests taken by high school students. In case you're jealous, this is a better approximation of my scenery for most of the week:Except there are hundreds of us, and we don't talk while we're grading, so the smiling people are probably delirious from reading hundreds of essays answering the same question for eight hours a day, seven days in a row. And there aren't any windows...However, my hotel is on the beach, which means my evenings are sunny. Call me if you're in Daytona Beach!

On Tuesday, I took a picture to help me remember what Curt and Peyton look like:And another one to remind me why Curt is awesome:Before Florida, Curt, Justin, and I marched in the Utah Pride Festival parade for the Human Rights Campaign on June 7:It was so rainy and cold especially compared to last year. We were soaked by the end, but it was worth it.

Birthday fun for everyone. But mostly me.

I loved my birthday! Curt and I both took the day off work on May 28 so that we could hang out together. First, I wanted a family self-portrait:Then, Curt took me clothes shopping for hours on end. He was a trooper -- he didn't complain once about how long I take to look at every item in the store, try a bunch on, leave them in the store while I think about them, go to another store to do the same thing, and then finally return to buy the clothes I've decided that I want.

We watched 17 Again at the theater (a rarity for us), which I found hilarious and Curt found funny:Between shopping stops in the afternoon and evening, we went home so that Curt could take a nap and I could model my new clothes...for myself since Curt was sleeping.

On Saturday, some friends celebrated the birthdays of Brianne, Amber, and me at Iggy's Sports Grill, where I'm semi-addicted to the Cabo-Wabo salad (sans the chicken and cheese). This is, from left to right, Hillary holding Beaumont, Amber, Brianne holding Halle, Debi, Shana (that's me), and Celeste holding Kaden (her other son, Lincoln sat in his highchair out of the picture):That night, we celebrated my birthday twin, Zach, who turned one at the same time as I turned...a year older. His parents, Ashley and Jason, had an Old West themed party:This is Debi and me sitting with her son, Logan -- he's so cute!On Monday, Craig Cloward of Cloward Construction installed French doors in in Curt's and my bedroom to lead onto our new deck. Aren't they gorgeous?Craig is awesome -- fair price, honest, and punctual. If you need a general contractor for anything, call Craig at 801-602-8411.

On Monday night, our friend, Megan, left to spend the summer with her sister, who lives in New York. Curt, Justin, and I said good-bye at her house before her family drove her to the airport:It's sad that she'll be gone the whole summer but so exciting for her to live in New York for awhile.

On Tuesday, Debi and I assisted Kaime during her bridal pictures session:
Kaime looked beautiful.

Today my friend and co-worker, Autumn, brought homemade rainbow cupcakes to work for me. Oh, and for the other people who work here. Aren't they pretty? They were delicious, too!

Thank you to everyone who called, texted, e-mailed, and Facebook posted birthday wishes to me. It made me feel great! I also received so many awesome gifts that May 28 continues to hold its spot on my days-of-the-year faves list.

P.S. This is a cool picture of Curt and Justin driving in the Bronco on May 13:

Happy Birthday to ME!

It's been a great week, so far. First, my brother-in-law, Steven, and the family came from Logan so that he could build a deck outside of Curt's and my bedroom:Soon there are going to be French doors instead of windows.

Steven also built stairs and a new railing for our little deck:We can walk into the backyard without having to go through the garage! We plan to stain/paint both decks.

On Friday night my friend, Pattie, and I watched her daughter, Ella's, dance recital:Her son, Owen, spent his time running around the empty rows of seats in the back of the auditorium. Pattie then bought me a birthday dinner at Red Robin and an ice cream sundae to eat while the four of us wandered around the Provo Towne Centre mall.

On Saturday night, Curt and I played with our nieces and nephews and some mosquitoes at the park so that Jesse and Blaine could have a birthday dinner for Jesse. Then, we made new friends at a party to say good-bye to our friend, Megan, who is moving to New York City and her sister for the summer.

On Sunday, my family celebrated our four birthdays in four days (my dad, me, Cavan, and Damaris), something that Cavan calls Second Christmas. All the presents piled on the table really felt like Christmas! Maybe not for the people who weren't celebrating birthdays, but they get their own days, so it all works out.

Afterward, Curt and I came home to set up our new gazebo while it rained:On Monday, I helped my Dad install a drip irrigation system in my parents' garden. Yup, I totally know how to do that, now. That night, we had Curt's family over for a birthday barbeque to celebrate the four birthdays in seven days (Jesse, Ralph, me, and Blaine). We ate make-your-own shish kebabs, which I really liked. Try it at your next barbeque.

Before leaving town, my sister, Damaris, gave me stuff from a time capsule that a bunch of girls in my neighborhood compiled on January 20, 1998 when I was 15. My historical remnants included a picture of my 13-year-old self:There was also a rubber Goofy coin purse and an alien head necklace:I was obsessed with The X-Files at the time, which is why I didn't put any X-Files paraphernalia in the time capsule -- I didn't want to give it up. Also, apparently my career dreams at the time involved being a famous actor. Who knew?

Fast forward 11.5 years -- Curt and I are spending Thursday together to celebrate my day of birth. Hooray!
